Amy MacDonald is that proverbial old head on young shoulders, a Scottish singer-songwriter who, despite her tender 19 years, writes songs with the grace, wisdom and proficiency of one with a score more on the clock. As influenced by The Libertines as any venerable old folk hand, the eleven songs on This Is the Life combine a traditional, acoustic folk-rock sound with a youthful spirit and self-assured lyrics that veer between the observational and the confessional. "Poison Prince" is a jagged guitar strut dedicated to some Doherty-like bad boy, a song every bit as pathos-laden as The Libertines at their doomed, romantic best with a closing treatise to find "An upbeat song/So we can dance the night away", while "Mr Rock & Roll" begins as a wryly withering jibe at some perennial party animals, but by the chorus, has softened into a subtle, touching tale of human coupling. MacDonald’s age doesn’t seem to have been an impediment; "Youth of Today", reportedly written when she was 15, is one of the better tracks here, while "Footballer’s Wife" is a clear-headed attack on vapid Barbie Doll celebrity that suggests this girl is very much on the right track. "Rolling Stone, here I come, watch out everyone/I’m singing my song" she sings on "Let’s Start a Band". Let that be a warning to you. –-Louis Pattison

Bought on a whim with no regrets!

I bought this during the £3 offer from Amazon over Christmas, not seeing anything else I particularly wanted. I wasn't bothered about it, but have ended up absolutely loving it and converting both myself and my husband into big Amy MacDonald fans overnight!

I really like the songs "Mr Rock and Roll" and "LA" but they are all brilliant and catchy.

My Glastonbury Star...

After the strenghth of Mr Rock and Roll, I was tempted to buy the album, since I loved her folky scottish husky voice, and it was well worth it. Every song on the album sounds like a hit record, especially "Lets Make A Band", and "LA". Since i bought the album, I havent stopped listening to it. Addictive and doesnt get old, a truely fantastic album 5/5

Looking forward to the next one

To me this set of eleven songs seems like This Is The Life - a deserving worldwide hit, with six million YouTube views at the time of writing - and ten charming variations. Collectively, they just about pull their weight, and occasionally get close to genius (e.g. 'Poison Prince', in my humble opinion). I very much hope we will see one or two more big ideas in the second album.

which deaf knobheads have given this 1 star?

The most talented artist that came out of 2007. Every track could be a single. 19/20 year old with all this wonderful music in her. Brilliant.

Excellent - more please

Many of these songs have an excellent use of rhythm, beat and bass to create very catchy pop rock, yet retaining the simplicity of singer/songwriter style folk music. My roots are in 70s/80 rock music and yet I really love this.
